SWEDISH POTPOURRI
AMAZING VARIETY OF GOODS. EXPORTS TO LONDON. A list of the varied goods arriving at the docks in one ship is often amazing to the layman. This applies especially to the vessels from Sweden which berth in the Millwall Docks. A typical cargo of one of these ships is described in “the Port of London Authority Monthly” for August. “The amazing variety of this trade gives one the impression that the Swedes can literally turn their hands to anything. “Steel, glassware and paper are the principal Swedish cargoes handled at Millwall docks. Most of the steel is destined for conversion into roller bearings, while a certain quantity of steel band is made into razor blades. The glassware ranges from the cheapest domestic articles up to beautiful bowls and ornaments. Among the consignments of paper there are usually a number of packages of peculiar shape containing embryo envelopes. “A natural outcome of a welltimbered country is the enormous range of Swedish wood manufactures; the Millwall Docks handle every conceivable article of this type from pill-boxes to sailing boats and motor launches. First-class electrical equipment and machinery is also shipped. At the other end of the scale are fresh fish, eggs, bacon, butter and other primary products, which are landed along with wallboards, oilstoves, horseradish, matches, blow-lamps, cutlery, dairy machinery and toys.”
