POLES WITHSTANDING GERMAN ATTACKS
Enemy Beaten Off In Warsaw Area. RESOLUTE STAND ON RIVER LINES RESISTANCE BECOMING MORE ORGANISED (By Telegraph—Press Association.—Copyright.) LONDON, September 11. The Vilna wireless announced that the situation of the Germans is becoming- increasingly difficult. The civilian population is sabotaging the invaders. ..Many are organising insurgent groups to fight the Germans. The Polish infantry is holding fast on all fronts. The Warsaw radio announced that the defenders had beaten off strong German attacks to the south-west and the north. Planes machine-gunned men, women and children in the streets. German radio bulletins support the Polish claims d that the Germans retreated in the suburbs under a heavy bombardment. A Polish communique says German attempts to break the defences along the Narew and Bug Rivers were frustrated, the Polish second line liquidating raids designed to destroy communications.
The communique, added that the Pomorze army withdrawing in the south-east engaged tlie enemy in an attempt to join jhe main army between the Vistula and the Bug. The Poznan army is battling with the Germans between Kutno and Warsaw. Polish resistance is becoming more organised daily and is halting the enemy advance on several fronts. The German army advancing from East Prussia has hardly progressed beyond the line from Sierpce, through Plonsk to Lomza, which it reached five days ago. Polish reports claim that the .German army in the south ventured too far and has been pushed back by the defenders.
