YOUNG WOMAN’S DEATH

I _ I CHARGES AGAINST CHEMIST. ACCUSED REMANDED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS, September 12. Police investigations extending over I a number of weeks into the circumstances surrounding the death of Miss Muriel Esther Reichelt, whose body was found in Avenue Road, Hasting?, on July 20, resulted in the appearance in the Mag's!rates’ Court, Hastings, today, befo •? Mr J. Miller, S.M., of Godfrey Coldwtll. aged 27, chemist, Hastings, on two indictable charges: That on or about June 17, in Hastings, he unlawfully supplied to Muriel Esther Reichelt a poisonous thing, knowing that it was to be unlawfully used with intent to procure a miscarriage of I Muriel Reichelt, and that on or about July 19, in Hastings, he improperly interfered with the dead body of Muriel Esther Reichelt. On the application of the police Coldwell, who was" represented by Mr P. Scannell, was remanded to appear on October 4, bail being allowed for £3OO in his own cognisace, with two sureties of £l5O. A request by Mr Scannell for suppression of the name on the ground that Coldwell was a young man in business, was refused, the magistrate remarking that it was not usual to suppress the name in indictable cases, i and a feature of this one was that i ’ there was a number of chemists in Hastings, so no object would be served I if the request were granted. In addi- . tion there were several other reasons for his refusal, which could not be divulged at present. “There are certain persistent rumours abroad, and I would like to point out that accused is charged with supplying a poisonous thing on June 17, and the young woman died about July 19.” said Detective-Sergeant Revell. ‘‘The police do not suggest that there is any connection between the supplying of this noxious thing and the death of the young woman a month later.” “I think that is a very fair statement to make, and it has my approval entirely,” said the magistrate. “It is only right that such a statement should be . made at this juncture, so that no false I suggestions should get abroad.”
