STATUE TO A BULL
FRENCH FESTIVAL OCCASION. France is to have a statue to a bull, to be erected at Beaucaire, in the Gard, and its inauguration will take place during a week of festivities. From 1927 to 1937, during ten years, the bull who is to have a statue drew crowds to the arenas of the district to see the professionals and amateuys try to snatch a rosette from between its horns. No one ever succeded, although the prize money was often very high. The bull s name was “Clairon.” In what are known as-“ Courses Landaises,” a bull with protected horns is let loose in the arena, and those ‘playing’ the bull have to remove the rosette from between its horns. The players often get a bad bumping. The displays are exciting to watch and there is not the unpleasant putting of the bull to death as in the real Spanish bull-fight. However, at Nimes and other places several times a year regular bull-fights are held and the most famous Spanish bull-fighters come specially from Spain to exhibit their skill. -
