TABLE TENNIS

WAIRARAPA CHAMPIONSHIPS. P. GREENLEES WINS MEN’S * CHAMPIONSHIP. There was a fair attendance at the Wairarapa Table Tennis championships held in the Dixon Street Hall on Monday night. Results of finals are as follows: — Men’s championship singles: P. Greenlees beat J. Nicholls. Ladies’ singles: Miss J. Larsen beat Miss J. McGovern. Men's doubles: J. Haywood and K. Brader beat J. Nicholls and M. Winslade. Ladies’ doubles: Miss J. Larsen and Mrs Nicholls beat Mrs Winslade and Miss H. Winter. ’ Combined doubles; Mrs Nicholls and I. Coleman beat Miss J. Larsen and R. Marko. In winning the men’s singles, P. Greenlees gave a finished and polished display of consistency, relying on defence to win all his games. He is to be congratulated on defeating J. Nicholls by 3 games to nil in the final of the best of 5 games. J. Nicholls was a trifle unlucky not to win the championship for the third year in succession but on the play of the night Greenlees would have been very unlucky not to have won. The ladies’ champion, Miss J. Larsen, was the best player on the night in the ladies’ section. It was her steady play, that won her the final by two sets to nil. In the men’s doubles, J. Haywood and K. Brader outclassed J. Nicholls and M. Winslade by steady placing play. Miss Larsen and Mrs Nicholls defeated Mrs Winslade and Miss H. Winter in the ladies’ doubles in a closely contested game. The combined doubles was one of the closest finals of the night and Miss J. Larsen and Mrs Nicholls are to be congratulated on winning two events each. Clubs are advised that the association is running an evening at which there will be table tennis, a social and dance, and all trophies won on Monday night will be presented. This evening will be held in the Dixon Street Hall before next Monday week.
