SPORT OF KINGS OVERSEAS

PERSONAL AND OTHERWISE. In additon to three mares recently purchased while on a visit to England, Mr R. R. Dangar, owner of Peter Pan, who is now at his Baroona Stud, Whittingham, has purchased two more well-bred mares to mate with his sire. They are Colonel’s Lady, foaled in 1935, by Bulger from Sonia, and Chrystal Queen, foaled in 1936, by Apron from Chrystaline. Bulger is by Bridge of Earn, by Cyllene from Black Jem, by the St Leger winner, Black Jester. Sonia is by Son-in-law from Swiney, by Swynford, sire of Blandford from Bojarin (a mare, bred in Austria), by Vona Vista, and sent to England as a two-year-old. Bojarin was from Janetta, by Isonomy from Janette, one of the few fillies to win the Oaks Stakes and St Leger double. Janette was a sister of Lord Lyon (Two Thousand Guineas, Derby, and St Leger) and Achievement (OneThousand Guineas and St Leger), and a half-sister of Paraffin who, the dam of Illuminata and granddam of Chelandry, founded one the greatest families in the history of the English thor--oughbred. Chrystal Queen’s dam does not appear in the latest volume of the General Stud Book, but probably she is a young mare who has not yet been returned. Apron, sire of Chrystal Qeen. is by Son-in-law from Aprille, by Chaucer, the sire of the dam of the sires Fairway, Pharos, and Colorado. Apron has been a stud success, for. with anything but the best .of opportunities, he has sired winners ol £46,292. Golden Miller, winner of the Liverpool Grand National of 1934, has been definitely retired. His wins included five Cheltenham Gold Cups. After his win at Liverpool he took a dislike to Aintree, and, although he started one of the hottest favourites ever known for tlje 1935 National, he baulked and got rid of his rider. He did the same when he later ran in the Champion Steeplechase at that meeting. In the 1936 National he fell and baulked the following year. That was his last run at Aintree'. During his career he was ridden by 10 different jockeys, two being amateurs. He cost Miss Paget 6,000 gns, and won nearly_3o races.
