Constable W. C. Robertson has received word of the death of his father, Mr Hugh Robertson, which took place at Egilsay Island, Scotland, on Sunday, July 16, at the age of 93 years. In an appreciation which appeared in "The Orcadian,” published at Kirkwall, given in the church ' by the Rev Mr Turner, the preacher referred to the deceased as being the oldest resident of the Parish of Rousty. and one who was much honoured. His whole life and activities •’ were devoted to the betterment of the Island of Egilsay, where he resided, and for the people he loved. On April 16 he laid a wreath on the base of the memorial recently erected to the memory of St Magnus, and three months afterwards on July 16 he passed into his rest. Both dates fell on a Sunday and perhaps it was all the more appropriate that his passing was on the morning of the Lord’s Day, which he 'always honoured. He was Session Clerk for his church for many years. He was a loyal member and office bearer, who discharged his obligations until the very end, even although he was in his 93rd year. His tombstone, which marks the sacred spot where his body rests, bears the motto which was the symbol and secret of all his Christian bearing: "His life was hid with Christ in God.” That was the religion he honoured, and the obligation which it demanded he never failed to observe. He was an old retired farmer. Up to the end of his long life his intellect was clear, showing at times a deep interest in international affairs, for he was a loyal subject of the Crown, being a Justice of the Peace. The Rev Mr Turner concluded his appreciation of deceased by saying he was an earnest man, but it would not reveal the whole truth. In one word, he was a sincere man. Beside Constable Robertson, of Carterton, deceased also has a son in the polic* force in the Auckland district. / GOLF COMPETITIONS MEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP.
