Mr Todd, of Wellington, is a visitor to Masterton, and is staying at the Empire Hotel.

The Hon Mr. Justice Fair arrived at Wellington from Auckland today to attend sittings of the Court of Appeal for some weeks.

The death occurred at Blenheim yesterday of Mr. Sydney , Briden, many years ago a resident of. Masterton, at the age of 45 years.

After a stay in Masterton of five months, Mr Alan (“Tiny”) Gilbert is returning to Houghton, South Australia.

Guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel. Masterton, include Messrs R. Knight, N. Knight. J. Kyle (Petone), and P. Broad (Wellington).

Mr. T. W. West has been re-elected chairman of the Christchurch Technical College Board of Governors. Mr B. Seth Smith has been elected deputy chairman.

Mr Geo F. Rox, manager of the Great North China Troupe, was in Masterton today arranging for the com pany’s appearance at the Regent Theatre.

The Rev John Davie conducted the service at the funeral on Saturday afternoon of the late Mrs A. Peterson, of Masterton. The pall-bearers were Messrs T. Jordan, D. L. Carlson, J. Dr Ross and R. Doggett. Mr. J. Buckley, son of Mr. George Buckley, bandmaster of the Artillery Band, Auckland, has reached England from Germany, according to cable advice received by his father. Mr. J. Buckley has been studying music at the Berlin Conservatorium for the past three years.

The internment of the late Mrs J. Ellison took place at the Masterton Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, the Rev John Davie conducting the service at the graveside. Among the wreaths was one from the Red Star Football Club. Messrs S. Evans, O. Cummins, J. W. Henderson and D. Hogg acted as pall-bearers. Mr. A. W. Thompson, headmaster of the Terrace End School, Palmerston North, has been appointed an actinginspector to the Wanganui Education Board consequent on the death of Mr. W. J. Boden, senior inspector of the board. Mr. Thompson will carry out the duties of inspector till Christmas, and in the meantime Mr. L. M. Morine, the first assistant, is acting as headmaster of the Terrace End School. Th funeral of the late Mr T. J. Thompson, of Eastbourne and formerly of Masterton, took place in Masterton on Saturday afternoon. The Rev John Davie officiated. Wreaths were sent by the staff of Amuri Motors, the Eastborne Bowling Club and the staff of Thompson Motors Ltd., besides many others. The pall-bearers were Messrs F. J. Osborne, A. W. Chapman, S. V. Gooding, J. Finlayson, M. P. Swainson and J. Jackson, representing the Masterton and the Eastbourne Bowling Clubs.

Mr. J. C. Peacock, who died as the result of injuries received in a motor collision near Belmont on Saturday night for many years was one of New Zealand’s foremost tennis players. He won his first New Zealand championship in 1901, when he was just 22 years of age, and he took the national singles title again in 1910. He won the New Zealand doubles title no fewer than six times, in 1900 with H. A. Parker: in 1901, 1902. 1909 and 1910. with F. M. B. Fisher; and in 1925 with M. L. C. Wilson. He represented New Zealand in Davis Cup matches against Yugoslavia and Portugal. He was a vice-president of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association since 1921. and was president in 1934-35. He was also president of the Wellington Lawn Tennis Association since 1921, and represented Wellington as a player on many occasions.
