RECREATION WEEK

MASTERTON CELEBRATION DECIDED UPON MANY OFFERS OF ASSISTANCE. MUSICAL AND SPORTS ACTIVITIES. A decision to observe Recreation Week in Masterton from September 29 to October 7 in accordance with the Government’s campaign for the promotion of physical welfare and recrea tion. was made at a public meeting held in the Municipal Building last night. The Mayor, Mr T. Jordan, presided over a fair attendance. "We have all heard expressions of opinion that this should be done and that should be done,” said Mr Jordan “but if we can distract the attention of the public from their present train of thought, much will have been accomplished." Mr Jordan stated that many people had come forward with various offer: of help in regard to the present inter national position. “No orders have yet been received,” he said, “and I would ask the public of Masterton to carry on with their work as calmly as possible. As soon as the time comes I will give those willing every opportunity to show their well-meaning.” The aims and objects of the meeting were outlined briefly by Mr Jordan. Mr H. H. Mawley asked if there were any definite proposals to be carried out. “If we have some idea of the proposals then we can decidewhether or not it is advisable to carry on with the scheme,” he said. Mr R. Gordon Lee: “I don’t think you’ll get the country people in.” Mi- P. Fagan: “At a time like this a gigantic community sing would help the spirits of the people as well as give them something to look forward to. Both the Masterton Municipal Silber Band and the Pipe Band could be in attendance.

Mr Jordan: “There should be enough talent, in Masterton to run a concert and play without much difficulty.” A representative of the Towns women’s Guild stated that the guile was prepared -to do anything it possi bly could. The Masterton Rugby Football Club’s representative stated that hi.-, club conducted an annual wind-up game between single and married members. The club was prepared to put on this game during the allotted time.

An offer to provide two exhibition indoor basketball games and a debating contest was made by the Y.M.C.A The Wairarapa Hockey Association representative stated that the associa - tion was willing to help in every way and could provide three games during the period. The Mahunga Golf Club stated it would throw open its links during the week.

A representative of the Masterton Wrestling and. Boxing Association promised co-operation. ’ The Inter-House Association representative said that the association’s an • nual meeting would be held next week and in the meantime it was not possible to put forward any definite suggestion. He was of opinion, however, that the association would be able to provide something. The Masterton Primary Schools representative said the schools could possibly do something in the matter of arts and crafts and folk dancing. The organising of a concert was left to Mr Renner.

The representatives of the various organisations were instructed to ascertain what they could do and to reportat a meeting which will be held shortJ “I think that a small charge should be made at the various functions which could be earmarked to form a neuclur for future emergencies,” said Mr Jordan.
