THEFT OF MONEY

LARGE SUM INVOLVED. ACCUSED FOR SENTENCE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, This Day. Arrested on a warrant on a Motueka fruit farm on Sunday. August 20. Eric Stanley Watts (37), insurance agent, was charged on remand at the SM. Court today that between June, 1938, and February, 1939, he stole sums of money amounting to £2,722 belonging to Thomas Arthur Taylor; also, on nine other charges that he stole from other persons sums ranging from £25 to £312. The total amount of which accused was charged with stealing was £3,631. Several witnesses said that they did not see any insurance policies on which they advanced money. Other witnesses said that they expected to profit by 121 per cent on the money handed to Waits.

Watts pleaded guilty on all the charges and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
