TURF NEWS AND NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Fields for Wanganui Spring Meeting Reviewed WINNER OF DUKE OF GLOUCESTER CUP WILL CONTEST MARANGAI HANDICAP INDICATIONS POINT TO SUCCESSFUL MEETING (BY “CARBINE.”) Class fields will contest the first day’s racing of the Wanganui Jockey Club's spring meeting which will be held tomorrow, and at present indications point to a successful gathering. Main interest will in all probability centre round the Marangi Handicap, a distance of one mile and a quarter. Nine runners are scheduled to face the starter among whom is Windsor Chief, the recent winner of the Duke of Gloucester Cup at New' Plymouth last weekend.
11.45— HUNTERS’ STEEPLECHASE. Two miles.
Ruenzori .... 9 9 gid. 9 0 The topweight, Lady Callaghan, scored some good wins last season and if in form should take a lot of heading in this race. Ohanga might be favoured although this horse did nothing last season. Hunter’s Morn, Ruenzori and Blue Steel should also gain support. Dozie Boy is expected by some to be on hand, while Bimbo, who ran third in the Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles on the last day of the combined meeting at New Plymouth on Saturday must go well. However, public support may favour Lady Callaghan Ohanga Bimbo 12.25— MAIDEN RACE. Six furlongs.
Split Second 7 12 Complex m 7 12 The Maiden Race will probably be one of the best and most interesting from the punters’ point of view, on the entire programme. In the Opunake Stakes Handicap at New Plymouth last weekend Race Away, with 8.7 up, ran a good race to fill second position and indications point to him again running well. The form of the majority of the others is practically unknown, but Col-
ibri, Air Shot, Night Eruption and a Split Second should all run well. The r public may follow t Race Away Night Eruption i Split Second c 1.5— r OKEHU HACK HURDLES. One mile, A
Memory 9 2 L Erdbus should not be wanting for support. Last season Erebus scored . some good wins, and it is understood £ that this horse is again striking form. , Toper is a horse who is expected to go 1 well and will probably be liked by a fair section of the public. Misurina and j Primak should also gain support, while q Dorado and Golden Memory must be < given every chance. Sir Nigel might upset matters although last season’s £ form was not outstanding. Glenthawn s win in the Ladies’ Necklace Handicap £ at New Plymouth should help that horse to gain support. Prinihia, Sunbeam and Hethers will all be liked but q in an open race the public may favour Glenthawn Erebus c Misurina 1.45— c PUTIKI HACK HANDICAP. One mile <
the Grand National meeting, and al- ; though the distance is further should not be far away when the numbers go up. Hagen will also be liked and should run a good race. Lord Moutoa, Aurora’s Star, Amatory and Raeburn are all capable of winning this race and should be on hand for most of the way. Seyfried is a horse whose chances must be carefully considered. High Test and Hunting Lore should also make the race interesting. Mother-in-Law is a form horse, while Haile Selassie must also be given every show. Maturity might upset calculations, so might Hunting Moments. Support may come for Raana Hagen Mother-in-Law 2.30—
Windsor Chief incl 51b pen 7 8 Although the topweight in the Marangai Handicap, Dungarvan, has done nothing startling of late he is sure to be liked and is in many circles expected to be in the money. Lowenberg is also given a great show by many; so are Entail and Kena. Windsor Chief, who scored in the Duke of Gloucester Cup at New Plymouth last weekend, is also certain to gain support. Might is a horse capable of winning in this company and is expected to run a good race. Conveyer, Centrepoise and Nereus will all be on hand to make the going interesting. Final selection, however, may favour Windsor Chief Lowenberg Kena 3.15— SEAFIELD HANDICAP. Seven
Lucullus Lad is in good form and is in certain circles expected to fill a place. Homily will also be well supported and this horse is quite capable of winning in this company. The Bigot, Notium, Old Bill and Rollicker should all run good races. Pin Money and Blonde Princess at the weight appear to be a good bet and will more than likely be followed up by a fail - section of the public. Gayest Son and Flying Acre arc two runners whose chances must also be seriously considered. The' public may go for Homily Mittie Blonde Princess 4.0— DURIE HACK HANDICAP. Six furlongs. Fiancee 9 0 Le Marquis .... 7 8
Fiancee and Rhodesian are considered by many to have good chances. Counter has been doing good work of late and should not be far away at the end. Dainty Dell filled a third position jat the recent New Plymouth meeting
only to be disqualified through her jockey being overweight. Noble Fox scored a second at New Plymouth and appears to be running well. Of the others Vadanoe and Baron Bold look the best. Support may come for Noble Fox Dainty Dell Counter 4.45— FLYING HANDICAP. Six furlongs.
Topweight Black Thread scored a second at New Plymouth last weekend and will probably be liked in this event. Gay Son and Race Call will also receive a fair share of the money. Sly Fox is a good one, but might be in need of a race or two. Submission. Florence Mills and Mittie will also be liked, and these three horses are expected io be handy. Solaria should have every chance: so should Hunting' Blood. Horses finding favour may be Black Thread Hunting Blood Solaria RACING FIXTURES September 7, 9—Wanganui Jockey Club.
