BATHING SUITS
BACK-TO-MODESTY MOVEMENT. The bathing suit goes demure. Such is the startling news flung down by Dolly Tree, the Metro-Gold-wyn-Mayer stylist. “The back-to-modesty movement has gained such a foothold that the 1939 Miss will lose the spotlight entirely unless attired in Gibson-girl charm for sunburning days,” declares the fashion expert. Even advocates of the strapless bathing suit bow to the femininism trend by edging the heart-shaped bodice with fluted ruffles. And the determined diehards who insist on a one-piece lastic compromise by having an all-over shirring which achieves that necessary dress-up look. So it’s back to bloomers for the beach via baby balloon sleeves and Peter Pan collars, back to “dressing up” in black faille taffeta for lazy lounging on warm sands, back to “little girl” dresses, chopped off just at the knees, free with pleats and flares, for beach romping; and matching skin tones in a pale golden tan to blend in with that demure look. No more blackened, mahogany tints for the wise mermaid. All in all, the streamlined girl has deserted the nudist cult and gone suddenly sweet and feminine. v
