RAINFALL FOR AUGUST (“Times-Age” Special.) Mr Cotter reports the following rainfall figures for August:—Rain fell on 26 days, the total being 399 points. The rainfall for the seven months of the year is 27.32 inches, against 44.23 inches for the corresponding period last year. CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF FIRST ROUND RESULTS. The first round for the championships was played during the weekend with the following results: — Ladies: Mrs Nitz defeated Miss Vennell; Mrs Read defeated Mrs Schofield; Miss Schofield defeated Mrs McKinstry; Miss M. Taylox’ beat Mrs A. McGregor. Men: N. Kummer beat R. Bannister; W. Kummer defeated N. Foreman; H. Baku beat E. Nitz; M. Paku won from I. McGregor by default. The following will play in the semifinals next playing day:—Mrs Nitz and Miss Schofield; Miss M. Taylor and Mrs Read, for the ladies, and the following men will meet, N. Kummer and W. Kummer: and M. Paku and H. Paku. Play for the handicap cup will continue as usual. During the week Mrs Nitz and N. Kummer defeated Mrs Read and A. McGregor in a challenge for the Buttons. Golf Ball. The fifth annual golf ball will take place on Saturday evening next and all arrangements are well in hand. This ball has always been the most popular function held here and the prospects this year seem very bright as every detail has been attended to by the committee. Supper arrangements are in the capable hands of the ladies and this should be a guarantee that it will be up to the usual high standard. The music will be supplied by Barnes’s Rhythm Boys, and given a fine night an enjoyable time is assured. COMING OF AGE PARTY MISS R. BURROWS HONOURED. A very enjoyable evening was spent at the Gladstone Hall on Friday last the occasion being a coming of age party .given by Mr and Mrs A. Burrows in honour of their daughter Rita. Over 50 couples were present, being friends of the host and hostess- and coming from many parts of the district. In proposing the health of the\guest of honour, Mr lan Macrae, in a few well chosen words, referred to her many good qualities and to the popularity which Miss Burrows enjoyed. He presented her with a gold key. Miss Burrows, in a very neat speech, thanked all those present for their good wishes and their felicitations. The popularity of Miss Burrows was shown by the numerous and valuable gifts which she received. Dancing was indulged in until the early hours of the morning and an enjoyable party was brought to a close with the singing of God Save the King.
