TABLE TENNIS
NOTES AND COMMENTS. LOCAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. (Contributed.) With the table tennis season nearing its close the Wairarapa Association is now thinking of its local championships. The first of these is the Wairarapa local club- championships to be held in the Dixon Street Hall on Monday and Tuesday, September 11 and 12. It has been decided to run this championship in two sections, senior and junior. The senior section is to be played on the Monday night and the junior on the Tuesday night. The ladies’ section will be played separately from the men’s. The association would like players to note that they may themselves nominate which grade they wish to play in, but the management committee reserve the right to regrade any entry.
In the doubles play where a senior’ player pairs with a junior their entry must be in the senior grade. Entries sent in by the various club secretaries must be in the hands of the association committee by September 7.
Players are advised that the New Zealand Table Tennis Association has amended the rule relating to volleying, which now states that a return from an opponent- which is off the table or is obviously going off on the full must not in 3ny manner be played. The point must be given against the player infringing. This rule will definitely be enforced at the annual championships. Taking into consideration the play for the year the most likely player is Mr J. Nicholls. Probably the most consistent player in the Wairarapa, he has won the Wairarapa championships for the last two years and he has every chance of winning for the third year in succession.
R. Clarke, also in top rank in the Wairarapa, will have to be considered and if he strikes top form on the night he will be a hard man to beat.
N. Myers, H. Myers, W. Day, J. Haywood, I. Coleman, M. Winslade and G. Fraser are all in the top flight and anyone of them may be dangerous on the night. Of the ladies, Mrs Nicholls is the first pick. Like Mr J. Nicholls she has been very consistent this season and if she strikes top form she should be the Wairarapa champion. Miss N. Brown is one of the most improved ladies this year and she will nave to be considered as a serious contender for the championship. Miss J. Larsen, Mrs Hurley and Miss V. Ward will be well to the fore and will have to be watched. Taken on the whole these championships should see some good games and spectators assured of seeing a high standard of play.
