NEW ZEALAND TOURNAMENT A MEMORABLE FINAL. CANTERBURY DEFEATS EASTERN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) BLENHEIM, September 2. Playing good hockey Canterbury and Eastern Southland fought a memorable final in the Dominion tournament today, Canterbury notching a sensational victory by two goals to one. Eastern, the only team to win all matches in sectional play, had the first goals of the tournament scored against them by a team, which, in section A, had been held to draws by Marlborough and Auckland. Eastern’s defeat was the first for five years and the second. in the past nine years. The teams maintained an amazing pace, with little between them except Canterbury’s slightly superior defence and ability to finish attacks. Miss M. Sherriff scored early in the first spell, netting a rebound off the goalie’s pads. Miss D. Dickey opened
the second half with an equaliser from a slashing forward rush. The deciding goal came 10 minutes from the finish, when Miss V. McNabb scored. The closing stages were hectic, but Canterbury maintained their grip in spite of desperate challenges by the deposed champions. Eastern receive the Floyd Shield as runners-up. Wellington won the Holden Cup, beating Feilding 3-2 in a close contest.
