N.Z. EMPLOYERS
FEDERATION PRESIDENT'S APPEAL TIME FOR UNITY AND LOYAL SERVICE. AVOIDANCE OF INDUSTRIAL DISPUTES. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The president, Mr A. C. Mitchell, has issued an appeal to the New Zealand Employers’ Federation, in which he states: “I know it is unnecessary for any appeal of mine to stimulate the loyalty of members or ensure their service, but in times like these there is apt to be a great deal of excitement and perhaps some careless thinking and a clear, calm and reasoned statement of our duties will not be out of place.” Mr Mitchell said some members would be called upon to render active military service. To some persons such service was not possible, but all could serve in one way or another. He stressed the value of preserving the social and economic life of the community. For some, service might mean only the quiet carrying on of ordinary business as efficiently as possible. Mr Mitchell adds: “Above all, I would appeal for a truce in industrial disputes, that nothing may be done by employers to disturb friendly relationships where such exist and that everything should be done to overcome any difficulties which may arise to prevent friendly relationships.” Concluding he says he trusts that there will be the utmost co-operation, harmony and goodwill between employers’ organisation and employees' organisations in this time of national disaster. LABOUR IN BRITAIN NOT TAKING MINISTERIAL POSTS. FULL CONTRIBUTION OFFERED TO NATIONAL CAUSE. (Received This Day, noon.) LONDON, September 3. In his speech in the House of Commons. the Acting-Leader of the Opposition (Mr A. Greenwood) said the Labour Party was not sharing responsibility in the tremendous tasks confronting the Government but had its own responsibilities, which it would not shirk. The Labour Party would continue to give a fall contribution to the national cause. “May the war be swift and short,” said Mr Greenwood, “and the peace which follows stand proudly ’tor ever on the ruins of an evil name.”
