FRENCH ARMY
WAR POSITIONS TAKEN UP COUNTRY TENSE BUT CALM. QUESTION OF ASSISTING POLAND. (Received This Day, 8.10 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 3. Reports from Paris state that the rear zone of the Maginot Line has been completely evacuated by civilians and that the French Army of over 8,000,000 has moved to its positions. Just where and how Britain and France are going to Poland’s aid is at present a secret. France is tense but calm. The reason why France did not act simultaneously with Britain is explained by the fact that the French forces are nearer' Germany and could go into action faster than those of Britain, needing only a few hours to mass in fighting strength. French circles said it appeared that Germany might be fighting alone. Regarding Italy, diplomats said there is still a game to be played out there. French official quarters expressed enthusiasm at the selection of Mr. Winston Churchill as First Lord of the Admiralty. GERMAN SUBMARINES REPORTED AT CURACAO. IN DUTCH WEST INDIES. (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) NEW YORK, September 3. A correspondent of the United Press of America at Cristobal, in the Panama Canale zone, states that a Dutch steamer reported that four German submarines are fueling at Curacao, in the Dutch West Indiec.
