A mere handful of Masterton Rugby fans were treated to a bright and carefree game at Memorial Park on Saturday when Gladstone defeated Masterton by 25 points to 14. The Masterton side was not at full strength, finding it necessary to fill up with lower grade players. Both sides threw the ball around in grand style and at times the standard of play was very high. A notable feature of the game was the splendid manner in which the Gladstone forwards combined with the rearguard, especially in passing movements. Gladstone obtained the majority of the ball in the scrums but in the line-outs Masterton pulled up a little. In the Gladstone pack all played well, but O'Brien, J. Walker, N. Ross and Mason stood out. For Masterton I. Percy and H. Ewington appeared to be the best. In the Gladstone rear-di-vision D. Nunn, C. Wyeth and J. Henderson played well. For Masterton S. Lamb at half played well while V. Gray and Norman also did well. From the kick-off Gladstone forwards broke away and O’Brien scored when the Masterton backs fumbled. The kick failed. Masterton now took a hand and from a scrum well inside the Gladstone territory they heeled and Lamb essayed a “pot” at goal which failed. A few moments later the Gladstone backs fumbled behind their own goal-line and H. Ewington, coming up fast, touched down. The kick failed. Gladstone worked back and Ross went over for a nice try. The kick was again unsuccessful. Gladstone were now having the better of matters and a back movement saw J. Henderson score under the posts. J. Foreman made no mistake with the kick. A few moments later Eric Henddrson, with a good run on the blind side sent C. Wyeth away, the winger beating six Mastertpn tack-, lers to score a really fine try. The kick failed and half-time sounded with the score Gladstone 14, Masterton 3.

On resuming Gladstone got under wayv'and J. Henderson crossed in a'handy position. J. Henson converted. Five minutes later Mason, after dribbling well into Masterton territory, beat the opposition to the touchdown. The kick failed. Gladstone increased their lead when Wyeth scored after Eric Henderson had made a beautiful opening. Masterton rallied and after the entire team had handled E. Hargood was awarded a try. The kick failed. A 50-yard dash by V. Gray saw that playei’ punt over the head of the Gladstone fullback and Ewington, coming up in support went over in a handy position. He converted his own try. Masterton continued to attack and from a melee on the Gladstone line Ewington again scored. The kick failed, leaving the final score Gladstone 25, Masterton 14. Mr Grantham was the referee. CARTERTON v OLD BOYS. EASY WIN FOR CARTERTON. The game to decide which team would contest the final game for the Redmond Cup was played on the Showground, Carterton, on Saturday, between teams representing Carterton and Old Boys. The home side were Without three of their ordinary team and played with substitutes who did yeoman service and were worthy of in - clusion to the team. A good deal of speculation ‘was rife as to the ultimate result of the game as the two sides previously had played a drawn game. 6-all. Saturday’s game was fast and strenuous and the first spell ended with no score, but Old Boys, with the wind at their backs gave some very anxious moments to the Carterton boys; indeed, they had hard luck in not scoring on more than one occasion In the second half Carterton’s team was re-arranged a little, with good results. The spell had not advanced far when Fitzgerald potted a splendid field goal. The game was very stubbornly fought and towards the end Harp, byfast following up, kicked the ball infield for Thompson to score. Loader’s shot at goal from a difficult angle failed. Not long afterwards and close on the call of time the Carterton forwards had the visitors penned on their line

and from a tight scrum Lipinski got possession and went across to score near the goal posts. The try was converted by Loader and the game ended 12-nil in favour of Carterton. Mr H. J. McKenzie was referee. RED STAR v. GREYTOWN. WIN FOR SOUTHERN TEAM. Fielding a team which consisted of only thirteen players, Red Star went under to Greytown at Greytown by 16 points to eight. Despite this handicap Red Star put up a formidable defence and the game was in part really bright. R. Harman, a junior forward who played for Red Star, turned on an excellent display scoring his side’s first try. Red Star's other points were notched by Russ Howard who scored and B. Howard who converted the try. R. Brunton was the outstanding Greytown player, scoring two tries and converting two. PEARSON CUP. WON BY CARTERTON.
