BABY CARNIVAL i FANCY DRESS BALL. ("Times-Age” Special.) The Clareville Hall was crowded on Thursday evening when a fancy dress ball was held by the ladies’ committee supporting the Taratahi-Belvedere baby (John Corbett). A very pleasant time was spent by all. The prizes were awarded as follows ♦L._for the best fancy costumes worn by competitors:—Girl under 6 years, Marion Booth, “English Lady;” boy under 6 years, Ronald Hayes, “Dutch Boy;” best original costume, under 6 years, Elaine Mellish, “Travel by Rail;” boy under G years, Kelvin Stretton, “Mickey Mouse;” seven years and over, best girl’s costume, Shirley Allen, “Irish Colleen;” boy, Jim Daken, “Jockey;” best original costume, over 7 years, Beryl Nicolson, “Saucy but 0.K.;” boy over 7 years, Ted Clarke, “Ruination.” Adults: Best pair, Mrs Thomas “Maori Lady,” Mrs Morgan “Maori Man;” best man’s costume, Mr Neville Humphries, • “Half Man, Half Lady;” most original costume, Mr Rose, “Plunket Nurse.” Vocal items were rendered by Miss Joyce Patterson, who sang two numbers, “Little Fair Echo” and “Ten Pretty Girls;” Mr Murray Edwards sang “Broken .Hearted Cowboy,” accompanying himself on the banjo; “Let us be Sweethearts Again,” by Miss Lola Thomas; “Little Alice Bluegown,” by Thea and Nancy Goodin.” All the items were warmly applauded. The remainder of the evening was taken up with games and dancing. Mr L. Humphries acted as M.C. and the music was kindly supplied by Mrs Rogers, Mrs K. H. Reid and Mr J. Edwards. Supper, provided by the ladies’ committee, was handed round, and a very enjoyable gathering was brought to a close just, after midnight. HOCKEY BANNIN SHIELD MATCH. Carterton seniors will be represented against Hastwells at Carrington Park, Carterton, in a game for the Bannin Shield tomorrow as under:— A. Ward, S. Fisher, I. Mackie, D. Irwin, M. Worsfold, ;B. Roberts, Bath, V. Sayer, D. Jackson, A. Fisher, A. Sewell. DRAINAGE SCHEME LONGBUSH PROPOSAL. Proposals for a drainage scheme at Longbush were discussed yesterday morning by the Wairarapa South County Council. In the afternoon councillors met settlers on the ground and discussed the matter with them. , PARCEL EVENING

TENDERED TO MISS ROBINSON. A “parcel evening” was tendered Miss Beryl Robinson, daughter of Mr and Mrs V. L. Robinson, of Wyndham Street, Carterton, in the Masonic Hall, last evening when a very large circle of friends of the bride-to-be gathered to wish her luck, happiness and prosperity. The time was spent in dancing, and Mr A. Kpy rendered a much appreciated vocal item. At an appropriate time in the proceedings Mr Jas. Steel, on behalf of those assembled, asked Miss Robinson to accept and open the many parcels. This she did amid,applause, disclosing some very valuable and useful gifts. The prospective bridegroom, Mr Roy Sowman, very heartily thanked all present on behalf of Miss Robinson for the presents and for the good wishes expressed. Dancing was afterwards proceeded with to music played by Miss Mary Herrick, Messrs A. R. and L. Daysh, Miss V. Irwin playing a much appreciated extra. Messrs N. Boyne and G. Riggs were M.C's. Supper was handed round and a very enjoyable gathering was brought to a close with the singing of the National Anthem. Miss Robinson is to be married to Mr Sowman on Saturday, September 9. FOOTBALL CONTESTS REDMOND CUP. ' A game for the Redmond Cup will be played on the Carterton Showgrounds tomorrow between Carterton seniors and Old Boys (Masterton). The J Carterton team will be Harp, Brown. Thompson. Holmes. Fitzgerald, Loader. Reading. Lipinski, Matheson (2), Trass, Alexander, Crawley, Taucher, Rasmussen, Smith. Walker. PEARSON CUP. Carterton juniors will play against Featherston on the Carterton Showgrounds tomorrow in the final for the Pearson Cup. The team wil be as un-der:—-King, Walker, Blake, Elake, McPhee, Geange, Warrington, Oliver, Lockett, Warrington, Steffert, Lane, Hurley, Deller (2), Jackson. Lenchan,' Adams. ' VITAL STATISTICS FIGURES FOR AUGUST. i The following are the vital statistics for Carterton for August:—Births, 10; Deaths. 5; Marriages 5. Personal. Mr C. H. Stevens, of the Power Board stall', Bunnythorpe, is in Carterton for a.few days, and is staying with his parents, Mr and Mrs C. E. Stevens, Victoria Street. Mr C. S. Gosling, of Wellington, will be the preacher at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday. He will also take the services at Longbush in the afternoon.

Church Service. The Church of England service will be conducted by the Rev. W. F. Stent at Ponatahi on Sunday at 2 p.m.
