CUSTARD CAKE

ECONOMICAL RECIPE. The following is the recipe for a good “standby” custard or economical fruit-cake. Four breakfast cups flour, ■ lib butter, 11 cups sugar, 11b sultanas, lib raisons, 11b currants, or any fruit desired, 4 teaspoons baking powder, essence of vanilla to flavour, 4 eggs and 2 large cups milk. Method: Rub butter into flour and add sugar and fruit. Beat the eggs, boil the milk and make a thin custard of the two. Make a well in the centre of flour and fruit, etc, pour in the custard and mix well. This makes a very wet mixture but do not add any more flour. Bake in a slow oven four hours.
