Herr Hiller assembled his Cabinet in the Chancellery tonight and members of the Reichstag have been ordered io be ready to assemble at a moment’s notice. A semi-official statement says that the Polish action in calling no further reservists has finally precipitated a measure of danger. It is added that Warsaw must recognise that it is a consequence of the blank cheque from England and will hardly contribute to direct negotiations. Poland Endangered PROTEST AGAINST GERMAN CLAIMS REICH NOT RESPONDING TO PEACE EFFORTS (Received This Dav, 12.20 p.m.) WARSAW. August 30. A communique calling more men to the colours declares that the Reich has started an aggressive policy against Poland. The open and continuous claims of Germany upon Polish territory leave no doubt that. Poland is endangered. Poland has accepted all efforts at conciliatory action made either by high personages or by governments friendly to Poland, but they have brought no response from the Reich. A Foreign Office spokesman, commenting on Herr Hitler’s Xoie.to Britain, said it afforded no settlement of the situation. Council of Defence ESTABLISHED IN GERMANY MARSHAL GOERING NAMED AS HEAD (Received This Dav, 1.5 p.m.) BERLIN, August 30. Herr Hitler has issued a. decree forming a Ministerial Council of Defence, of which Marshal Goering is to be the head. This action is designed to assure unified leadership in the administration and economy of the Reich “for the duration of the present foreign political tension.’’ The council is empowered to issue decrees with the power of law. General Brauchitsch has issued a proclamation empowering army commanders to take over the civil authority and rule by decree in frontier districts. A spokesman explained that this ' was a “twilight regime,’’ similar to that established in the Sudetenland last year, midway between normal conditions and those of martial law.
