NAZI COMMENT ON OFFER OF MEDIATION
RECEIVED WITH “GREATEST SYMPATHY. ONUS PLACED ON LONDON AND WARSAW. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day. 9.50 a.m.) LONDON. August 30. Although there is no wish immediately to place over-much hope as signs that tension is easing, evidence is accruing of a widespread search for a way out of the impasse. An inspired German statement, issued to journalists in Berlin, said political circles had received the mediation offer from Belgium and Holland with "the greatest sympathy” and added "German efforts are being exerted in the same direction as those of the Belgian and Dutch sovereigns, which are much appreciated. Germany has already taken the initiative, and the issue now depends upon decisions in London and Warsaw." The British United Press correspondent in Berlin comments: “While professedly anxious not to destroy the possibility of negotiations with Poland within the framework of the German demands, official circles declare that whereas Britain or Belgium and Holland could invite Poland to participate. Germany could not. In this connection they cite Herr Hitler’s letter to M Daladier in which he said he saw no possibility of inducing the Poles to accept a peaceful solution." The correspondent of the Associated Press of Great Britain at Brussels says informed quarters state that, if a conference can be arranged, it will probably be held at The Hague.
