CENTENNIAL MEMORIALS

SKETCH PLANS FOR PROJECTS. ARCHITECTURAL ADVICE. In an address to the National Cen ■ tennial Council the Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon W. E. Parry) made sympathetic reference to the difficulties of a number ol’ Centennial committees in meeting the requirements of the National Centennial Council in the matter of sketch plans of their memorial projects. "These districts." the Minister stated, "arc loyally responding to a request b\ the Government to observe the Centennial in an appropriate way. and 1 feel that they would welcome some system of referring their designs to a competent body for suggested improvements, and for the introduction 0.memorial features where such neccs sary elements are lacking.” The Minister’s suggestion was enthusiastically received by members of the Council, and subsequently, on the recommendation of Mr J. W. Mawson Town-Planning Officer, and Professor Knight, Principal of the School of Architecture, Auckland, and with the concurrence of the Public Service Commissioner, it was decided to appoint to the staff of the Centennih! Branch of the Department of Internal Affairs, a temporary advisory archi tect. The selection for this position is Mr Paul Pascoe, A.N.Z.1.A., A.R.1.8.A. a young architect of Christchurch, who has had experience in his profession overseas as well as in New Zealand. The Minister desires it to be clearly understood that in submitting suggested alterations to plans, the Departmen' does not regard it as mandatory that Centennial Committees should accept such alterations. The modifications are presented merely in a desire to be helpful to the committees concerned. It is wholly a case of friendly co-oper-ation.
