BREMEN HELD UP

UNEXPLMNED ACTION IN NEW YORK GERMAN OFFICIALS AMAZED. event without precedent. NEW YORK. August 29. A mysterious move by the United States Treasury Department held the German liner Bremen here against the captain’s orders. The Bremen and the French liner Normandie arrived during the day. The Bremen was expected to return to a German port immediately without passengers, but the Treasury decided that the liner must first .undergo a thorough inspection. Moreover, it was announced that the Normandie would be inspected first, the Bremen having to wait her turn, despite the fact that the Normandie had no immediate turnabout orders. The Bremen had discharged her cargo, had full steam up. and was virtually refuelled, when the decision was announced. The line’s officials were amazed and irked by the United States’ action and insisted on the Bremen sailing at the appointed time regardless of the Treasury’s action, whereupon a detail of police was posted to watch the ship. This raises the interesting conjecture whether the coastguard cutters would set out in pursuit if the Bremen sails without her clearance papers. It is the first time in the memory of shipping men that a vessel of such size has been so treated. The Bremen arrived with 1669 passengers after a series of unexplained mix-ups regarding the docking day. the announcement of which was changed three times by the line officials. The crew refused to comment on mysterious reports about the Bremen’s course when at sea. SEEKING SAFETY GERMAN AND ITALIAN SHIPS. LONDON. August 29. (Received This Day. 10.35 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 29. According to the Collector of Customs a search is being made for armaments and spies aboard the Bremen. PASSENGERS DETAINED NORMANDIE ALSO HELD UP. (Received This Day, 10.35 a.m.) LONDON, August 29. A “New York World” telegram states that seventeen passengers were taken to Ellis Island also that thirty doctors, believed to be returning to Germany for military service, were seized by Customs officials. The Associated Press of America states that the Normandie and Bremen were held up because Customs officials are searching foreign ships for armaments that could be used to prey on ocean commerce in the event of war.
