“They must be Irish trout," said Mr W. Lindsay, a member of the Waimate County Council, when telling members of the council that anglers had been catching trout in the Waihao River with potatoes as bait. The trout, which seemed to relish this peculiar bait, were to be found in the Waihao "box,” and the anglers who fished there had been digging up a farmer’s potatoes to catch the fish, said Mr Lindsay, and consequently the farmer had stopped access to the “box” through his property. It had been suggested by the Waimate Acclimatisation Society that a road should be put through, but nothing could be done until a reply had been received from the Department of Crown Lands, as the land was controlled by it.
