LONDON QUOTATIONS SHARP RISE IN BUTTER PRICES. CHEESE MARKET FIRMER. There was a sharp rise in the price of butter in London last week. According to the cabled report received by the Primary Products Marketing Department, there was an active and advancing market throughout the week. New Zealand salted butter closed on Friday af 121 s to 122 s a cwt, a rise of 5s on the week.
Friday's closing quotations, with those of the preceding week in parentheses. were as follows:—

Retail prices were unchanged last week. New Zealand at Is 2d to Is 3d and Danish at Is 3d a lb.
The present average price of 121 s 6d is equal to approximately 14.75 d a lb. f.0.b.. New Zealand ports, compared with the guaranteed price of 14.89 d a lb, f.o.b. The London equivalent of the guaranteed prices is 124 s 3d a cwt. The equivalent price of cheese is about 6.64 d a lb., f.0.b., compared with the guaranteed price of 8.42 d.
Deliveries of New Zealand butter from store last week were 1290 tons, compared with 1133 tons for the preceding week. The quantity in store, including 639 tons ex Empire Star, was 4896 tons, compared with 5138 tons a year ago. Deliveries of Australian butter from store last week were 2046 tons, compared with 1138 tons for the preceding week. The quantity in store was 6375 tons, compared with 4364 tons a year ago.
The cheese market firmed last week. New Zealand advancing 3s to 4s a cwt. Friday’s closing quotations, with those of the preceding week in parentheses, were as follows:—

Australian, white and coloured, 56s to 57s (53s to 545).
Canadian, white and coloured, 62s to 63s (62s to 635); c.i;fi, 59s (565); old season's, white and coloured, 74s to 75s (74s to 755).
English, finest farmers’, 82s to 88s (82s to 88s); factory cheese, 58s (56s)'. Market steady. The retail price of New Zealand cheese was unchanged a 8d a lb. Deliveries of New Zealand cheese from store last week were 23:340'crates, compared with 16.733 crates' for the preceding week. The quantity in store, including 6230 crates ex Empire Star, was 85647 crates, compared with 54,381 crates a year ago. Gradings of cheese in New Zealand for the week ended August 19 were' 242 crates of white and 475 crates of coloured, a total of 717 crates: Deliveries of Canadian cheese last week were 5595 boxes, cbrhpared with 9742 boxes for the preceding week. The quantity in store was 128,934 boxes, compared with 97,690 boxes a year ago.
