ABOUT HORSES

BIDE A WEE'S EFFORTS ENCOURAGING. There was a prospect of Dungarvan and Lustral going on to Sydney to join T. R. George's small team there after the Grand National meeting, but their form at Riccarton would not justify such a trip. The Tea Tray—Kildeer three-year-old in F. Gilchrist's stable at Ellerslie has been showing promising speed in his work and is a likely-looking sort. This novice comes from a proved family, being a descendant of Vivandiere, a daughter of Musket. The latest efforts of Bide a Wee have been encouraging, and when properly seasoned he should be equal to winning a hack sprint event. This three-year-old was started four times last season and that experience will prove useful when he begins racing again.

During the last week or two Land Girl has been doing her work with blinkers on, and her manners have improved noticeably. When in the mood this mare can muster up a lot of speed, and if blinkers are used on her on race days she will probably run more generously. Now that the spring meetings are approaching Silver Stick is being sent along a bit faster and is doing everything required of him in a capable manner. As a two-year-old last season Silver Stick’s form was consistent, resulting in one win and five minor placings in nine starts. As a three-year-old this season Silver Stick is likely to reach the best class. One of the biggest two-year-olds in training is the Blatherskite —Flout filly. Flippant. She stands fully 17 hands at a high wither. She is a livercoloured chestnut with a star, and appears to throw back to her grandsire or to some of his stock in colour. Flout, the dam of the filly, was got by Polazel from Disdainful, the dam of Haughty Winner. The Cardinal, who won the Auckland Handicap last week, is a chestnut gelding by Night Raid from Palestrina. by Clarenceaux. The Cardinal was bred by Mr G. A. Kain.
