The Duke of Gloucester Cup TO BE RUN AT NEW PLYMOUTH NEXT WEEK EXCELLENT CLASS OF HORSE ENGAGED (BY “CARBINE.”) The next race for the Duke of Gloucester Cup is to be run at New Plymouth on September 2. There are twenty-one entries and the class is stronger than is usually found in races for amateur riders. One of the runners is Taitoru, who, though he is past his prime, has won good races in open company. Vataroa, another winner in open company, is in the list, and so are El Meynell and Cuisimier, who were head liners amongst the hacks. Raana and Windsor Chief, who have also been entered, were winners at the Grand National meeting. Aussie Ra, who ran second to Padishah in the Grand National Hurdle race, will also be a competitor.

Two seasoned and successful “bracelet” performers engaged are Misurina and Kohika. Other useful performers in the list are Golden Ridge. Halley. High Test, Royal Choice, and Conveyer. This should be one of the best contests in the short history of the race. The meeting which is staging it is one of the most popular and successful hunt gatherings in the North Island—the Combined Hunt Clubs. The combination is that of the Taranaki Hunt Club and the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club, who some years ago agreed to pool their one-day permits and hold a two-day meeting at New Plymouth. The experiment was an immediate success. It has become a permanency and has steadily grown in importance and prosperity.
