POLAND WILL FIGHT
ACCORDING TO COLONEL BECKE BEFORE GRANTING GERMAN DEMANDS. AMBASSADORS NOTIFIED. I (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) ROME, August 25. It is reported that Colonel Beck (Polish Foreign Minister) late today informed Polish Ambassadors in all the European capitals that Poland will fight before granting the German demands. It is understood that British efforts ’ to induce Poland to compromise so far have been rejected. RUSSIAN MOVE REJECTED BY POLAND NOT GENUINE PEACE GESTURE (Received This Day, 11.35 a.m.) WASHINGTON, August 25. Polish official circles here declare that Poland cannot negotiate through Russia because the Russian move is not a genuine peace gesture, but I merely a new method by which to present the German demands and probably attempt to jockey Poland into appearing to be opposed to a peaceful settlement. FRONTIER INCIDENTS POLAND LODGES PROTEST IN BERLIN. (Received This Day. 11.35 a.m.) WARSAW, August 25. It is officially stated that a German I- military patrol penetrated Polish terri- ■ tory for a distance of one kilometre e near the village of Penta, a few miles s north of Ostrolenka. Encountering a r Polish patrol, the Germans used a submachinegun. The Poles returned the fire and the Germans eventually withdrew, leaving their leader. Corporal Kastenhagen, dead on Polish territory. A Berlin message states that the Po- ‘ lish Ambassador protested agaist Ger- ' mans machine-gunning a Polish border post in the Rybnik district. ‘ FIRING BY POLES [ ON GERMAN WARPLANES. 1 (Received This Day, 12.45 p.m.) BERLIN, August 25. A radio broadcast announces that Polish anti-aircraft guns fired on a German plane that was flying over Danzig. One of its occupants was the , State Secretary, Herr Stuckart. It is not stated whether the plane was struck. This announcement was followed by the declaration: “This is an intolerable provocation and against the rules of international law.” , A message from Warsaw states that four new cases are repored of Polish [ anti-aircraft batteries firing on German 1 warplanes, which it is stated were flying over Polish territory.
