IDLE AND DISORDERLY
TWO MEN SENTENCED At MASTERTON. DRINKERS OF METHYLATED SPIRITS. Charged with being idle and disorderly persons, and also with having been drunk, two men, Arthur Bryce aged 48 years, and Leo Percy Edmonds, aged 55 years, described as labourers, appeared in the Masterton Court today before Messrs C. E. Grey and E. M Hodder, J.P’s. On the first charge they were sentenced to three months imprisonment, and on the second charge they were convicted and discharged. ' Detective-Sergeant W. Kane, who conducted the case for the police, stated that the men arrived in Masterton about a week ago. On August 17 the\ called at the Police Station and wen given tea, bed, and breakfast by Sen-ior-Sergeant G. A. Doggett: "They told the senior-sergeant that they had a job to go to,” said Detective-Sergeant Kane. “However, they did not go. but stayed around Masterton making general nuisances of themselves. Last night as the result of a 'phone call Constable N. D. Bach arrested them on the Tc Ore Ore Road at about 7.50 o'clock." “Both men are addicted to methylated spirits drinking and have bad records. I would suggest that a term of imprisonment be imposed to straighten them out. I also understand that the men now have a job to go to. but I feel certain that they would not do credit to it, nor would they stop there very long,” said Detective-Sergeant Kane. Mr Hodder: “Looking at their records 1 do not think that they would do justice to the job they are allegedly going to. and it appears as if they have not as yet learnt a lesson."
