DAVIS CUP CONTEST AUSTRALIA v YUGOSLAVIA. PUNCEC DEFEATS BROMWICH. By Telegraph—P—ss Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 10 a.m.) NEW YORK. August 24. In the Davis Cup tie between Austral! and Yugoslavia, Quist (Australia) defeated Mitic 6/0, 6/4. 6/3; Puncec defeated Bromwich (Australia) 6/2, 8/6, 0/6, 6/2. The first set between Quist and Mitic was unimpressive. Mitic’s errors seemed to stamp him as a novice, and even in the second set he gave no real demonstration of the tournament calibre, until the seventh game in the second set, when he played with surety. Quist lapsed into errors thus prolonging the match until the tenth game. Mitic broke Quist's service at one stage in the third set, but the Australian retaliated by accounting for his opponent’s service in the ninth game. Bromwich held a brief advantage in the first set against Puncec, but the latter soon mastered the play of the Australian. He continued brilliant at the net and on backcourt play. In the second set Bromwich fought back gamely, but Puncec's versatility and greater accuracy gave him the victory. He yielded the third game after a leg massage, but took the fourth in quick time. PUNCEC’S VICTORY COMMENT BY HOPMAN. (Received This Day, 10.55 a.m.) NEW YORK, August 24. Hopman stated that Puncec's victory was a surprise but illustrated clearly that Bromwich had not had sufficient forcing practice in first-class singles. "I am trying to arrange a much stiffer competition after this and hope to have the services of Perry for that purpose,” he said.
