TIMBER INDUSTRY
IMPORTANCE TO CANADA. OTTAWA. Indicative of the importance of timber in the lumber industry in Canada, it has been calculated that the average annual distributions of wages and salaries in logging operations averages at around 60.000,000 dollars. Operations in the woods are carried on more or loss uniformly throughout the year in British Columbia, on the Pacific Coast, while in Eastern Canada the average logging season is 100 days, iOn account of the larger size of the trees in British Columbia and the greater use of logging machinery, the production per man per day is higher than elsewhere in Canada and averages about 225 cubic feet of standing timber. In eastern Canada, the average production per man per day is about 90 cubic feet. It has been estimated that one out of every nineteen persons in British Columbia is dependent on the lumber industry for livelihood.
