THE GONDOLIERS

JUBILEE YEAR. The end of the year will see the jubilee of a comic opera that still stands high in the list of popularity with amateurs. “The Gondoliers” was originally produced on December 7, 1889, at the Savoy Theatre, London. Hailed as the best of the series since “The Mikado,” the original production settled down to a very long run. It was this play which also broke the long period of abstention from the theatre by Queen Victoria after the death of the Prince Consort. In March, 1891, a special performance was given in the Waterloo Chamber, Windsor Castle.
