SHOCK IN WARSAW

VIEWS OF LONDON “DAILY HERALD” ASTOUNDING REVERSAL OF POLICY. GRAVE APPREHENSION FELT IN PARIS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON. August 22. The Warsaw correspondent of the British United Press says that the newfe shocked Warsaw. The first reaction was to wait and see what Britain and France propose doing. Some express the opinion that it will means the end of British, French and Russian talks. Others point out that non-aggression pacts do not affect alliances and recall that, the alliance between Poland and France remained in force despite the non-aggression pact between Poland and Germany which Herr Hitler subsequently denounced. In London the Labour “Daily Herald,” in a leading article, says the anouncement represents one of the most astounding and most shocking reversals in history. It is reported in Warsaw that Poland is not surprised, as more than once it pointed out that the Soviet did not desire to involve itself in European affairs. Other countries might have spared themselves the disappointment if they had heeded Polish views. It is stated that the Polish programme and policy never envisaged Russian help. There is the gravest, apprehension in Paris, but with a general disinclination to discuss the Soviet bombshell. Official circles froze up today, while the Communist newspaper "L’Humanite" and the Socialist “Populaire” do not publish the Soviet pact decision, but give prominence to the trade agreement between Russia and Germany, claiming it as a victory for Russia. “L'Oeuvre” declares that all is not lost if the Soviet’s action cures those Frenchmen who had a mania for mixing ideology with foreign policy. "L’Action Francaise” demands the immediate recall of the military mission in Moscow.
