Coursing Record. At the meeting on Saturday next of the Wairarapa Coursing Club, three Waterloo Cup winners will be paraded. The club is proud of the record of having the Cup winners for three successive years. The dogs are: 1937 winner. Mr E. J. Wing's Rereatu: 1938 Winner. James and Taylor's The Clipper; 1939 winner. James and Taylors Dainty Footsteps. Also on parade will be Desert Storm which tied with Dainty Footsteps prior to the final decision at Hastings. Desert. Storm is at present under lease to Messrs James and Taylor.
Ngauruhoe Still Active. Ngauruhoe showed further signs of activity yesterday. With a clear sky in the early morning a steady column of fumes was seen mounting. Periodically shots showed in the dense mass from the crater on the summit and rose rapidly, before being dispersed by the wind. About 8 a.m. the column mounted to 3000 feet above the summit, making a fine spectacle in the morning sunlight. The fumes were lighter in colour than in the 1934 eruption and the column yesterday did not mount to such heights, but the sight aroused great interest among a large crowd of guests at the Chateau. At times a distinct odour of sulphur was discernible at The Chateau.
Female Labour Scarce. So acute has become the scarcity of female labour in the clothing industry that girls in Auckland are being offered as high as £3 5s a week, which is 15s more than the award rate, to act as machinists. Advertisements have actually appeared offering employment to machinists at £3 5s a week. Girls have also been offered 25s a week to start as apprentice?, though the award starting rate is 17s 6d. In several other industries in Auckland many girls are receiving above award wages. Adult women without experience have been engaged at £2 a week, which is 4s above the basic wage. In the footwear industry, where there is an acute scarcity of girls to meet production needs, some girls receive more than award wages.
