N.Z. SHEEP AND CATTLE
OVERSEAS DEMAND. PURCHASES FROM WAIRARAPA. Tasmania, which in the past has drawn on Nev/ Zealand for high quality stud sheep, is now securing both cattle and pigs from the Dominion. Following on the visit of Mr Allan Stewart, Managing Director of the Allan Stewart Proprietary Company, Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co Ltd. have received orders for Romney Marsh.. Southdown and Border Leicester sheep. When in New Zealand. Mr Stewart was very much impressed with the Ayrshire cattle of Mr J. G. Donald, of Featherston. Unfortunately, the bull which Mr Stewart favoured was sold by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd., to a South Island client at a three figure price. His next selection has just gone forward to a leading Tasmanian breeder at a price bordering on three figures also. What impressed Mr Stewart most about the "Ardgowan” Ayrshire!; was their splendid type and very high butterfat backing, these cattle throughout the herd testing a better average than any other stud in New Zealand. As a result of the increased demand for New Zealand bred flock rams throughout Australia, the stud stock department of Wright Stephenson and Co. Lid have received instructions from a leading Western Australian fat lamb breeder to forward 50 Romney Marsh and 50 Southdown ram hoggets. The Southdown:; were secured from Messrs A. and J. Gray. Masterton.
The final consignment of the remainder i.-f the whole Romney Marsh flock of A. E. Anderson. Clareville. purchased by a leading New South Wales breeder, was forwarded by the Wanganella to Sydney. The’ shipment comprised 85 ewe hoggets.
The Romney Marsh stud of Mr J. E. Hewitt, of Mangamaire. has just received an order for six special stud ewes. Mr Hewitt permitted the stud stock department of Messrs Wright. Stephenson and Co., Ltd. to select from his own ewes at a high figure the six ewes. Thegc sheep are required to found a new blood line in a wellknown West Australian Stud.
