MUCH RACED HORSES
EASTERN HERO HOLDS RECORD.
It is indeed unusual for racehorses in England to start in more than a dozen races during the season, but in New Zealand the position is much different. Our racehorses have to work much harder, and during the season just closed over 150 horses had started in 20 races or more. The record for the most starts last season is held by the three-year-old Eastern Hero, by The Buzzard, having taken part in 37 races. The following is a record of some of the horses who did considerable racing last season, S standing for starts, F for first Sec for seconds and T for thirds:
Defaulter, by Defoe, who heads the list of winning horses for the season, with eight consecutive wins and a second out of nine starts, holds the best average, while Royal Chief, by Chief Ruler, only scored two wins and two seconds out of seven starts in the Dominion. The two-year-old Vascones started in 19 races for three wins, three seconds, and three thirds, a very heavy season for a youngster. The other side of the picture is equally interesting, but not so for their owners. Triune, by Tippler, started no fewer than 29 times without winning once, but was six times second and placed three times. That record was beaten by Gay Sister, by Gay Shield, as she started 25 times without even getting into a place. Other horses who raced consistently badly during the period under review were:—
