REBATE NOT GRANTED
GOVERNMENT AND RACING CLUBS. CONCESSION HITHERTO MADE WITHDRAWN. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Presumably in view of the large increases in totalisator turnover, and also to help the country’s finances, the Government has decided not to grant racing clubs the usual one per cent rebate on the tax payable by clubs. In the past the authority to make the concession has been taken each year by a clause in the Finance Act, under which one-fifth of the tax payable by clubs may be retained for their own purposes. The procedure has been for the clubs, through their national organisation, to make an application to the Government for the rebate, which to the major clubs represents a considerable sum. This year their applications have been turned down. The clubs are entitled to receive a 21 per cent refund on tile tax payable on th. 1 first £20.000 turnover in each year, and subject to that the Government receives £8 7s for every £lOO invested and the clubs receive £8 10s. The refund is limited to £5OO.
