BUTTER MARKET EASIER.
SHARP FALL IN CHEESE PRICES
The price of New Zealand butter in London eased to 116 s to 117 s last week, a fall of Is a cwt. compared with 124 s 3d. the sterling equivalent of the guaranteed price. According to the cabled report received by the Primary Products Marketing Department, there was an improved demand at the end of the week.
Friday’s closing quotations, with those of the previous week in parentheses, were as follows:— New Zealand: Salted, 116 s to 117 s (117 s to 118 s; a year ago, 120 s); unsalted, 117 s (117 s to 118 s; a year ago. 121 s to 1225).
Australian: Salted, 107 s, 108 s to 109 s (107 s to 108 s); unsalted, 106 s. 107 s to 108 s (107 s to 108 s).
Danish: 103 s f.0.b.; 124 s to 125 s spot (103 s 124 s to 1255). Market quiet. Dutch Salted. 104 s to 105 s (102 s to 103 s); unsalted, 103 s to 105 s; ex 106 s (102 s to 103 s). Irish: Cream, salted, 117 s (117 s Lithuanian: Unsalted, 106 s to 108 s (107 s to 109 s). Polish: Salted and unsalted, 104 s (104 s to 105 s). South African: 106 s (106 s
Retail prices were unchanged. New Zealand at Is 2d to Is 3d and Danish at Is 3d a lb. Deliveries of New Zealand butter last week were 1133 tons, the quantity remaining in store being 4149 tons, compared with 6670 tons a year ago.
Deliveries of Australian butter were 1138 tons, the quantity in store being 6215 tons, compared with 4748 tons a year ago.
The Imperial Economic Committee estimates the stocks of all butters in store at 1,239,025 boxes, compared with 1,418,678 boxes a year ago. There was a sharp fall in the price of New Zealand cheese, which at 56s showed a decline from 3s to 4s a cwt on the week. The present price is 15s 6d to 16s a cwt below that ruling a year ago. The market is reported to be steadier at the lower prices. Friday’s closing quotations, with those of the previous week in parentheses, were as follows: —
New Zealand: White, 56s (595; a year ago, 71s 6d to 725; coloured, 56s (59s to 60s; a year ago, 71s 6d to 725). Australian: White and coloured, 535, 54s to 55s (55s to 58s).
Canadian: White and coloured, 62s to 63s (635); c.i.f., 56s (575); old season’s white and coloured, 74s to 75s (73s to 755).
English: Finest farmers’ 82s to 88s (78s to 84s); factory cheese, 56s (565).
Deliveries of New Zealand cheese last week were 16,733 crates, the quantity remaining in store being 101,238 crates, compared with 66,844 crates a year ago.
Deliveries of Canadian cheese were 9742 boxes, the quantity in store being 117,083 boxes, compared with 8(1,890 boxes a year ago. Gradings of cheese in the Dominion for the week ended August 11 were 330 crates of white and 462 crates of coloured, a total of 792 crates. ,
