BADMINTON

HAWKE’S BAY TOURNEY J. PAYTON WINS SINGLES. BRILLIANT PLAY IN FINAL. (By Telegrapn—Press Association.) HASTINGS, August 20; Because of a record number of entries it was not possible to complete all sections of the Hawke's Bay Badminton tournament last night. With the- exception of the B grade mixed doubles- ail championship events were decided, and the remaining games will be played, this week. The tournament, which started on Thursday, was the most successful on record, and the 108 entries included several from Manawatu and Waira-i rapa.

J. Payton (Masterton) won the men’s A grade singles title, beating Watson (Hawke’s Bay) by straight sets in a final that produced a number of brilliant rallies. The winner showed, slight all-round superiority and Watson was obviously feeling the effects of a particularly gruelling match in the semifinals.

The women’s A grade final was very hard fought, three sets being necessary before Miss Lassen could get the better of Miss Evans. The general opinion was that this was the finest women’s single seen in Hawke’s Bay. Superior combination enabled' Vesty and Watson to beat Payton and Mawson in straight sets in the men's A grade doubles. In the women’s doubles Misses Lassen and Lancaster had a comfortable win over Misses Jenkins and Garnett.

The mixed doubles championship was won by Watson and Mrs Mawson from Wilson and Miss Lassen after two hard sets. The results were as follow:—

A Grade. Men's singles: J. Payton (Masterton) beat Watson, 12-15, 15-8, 15-9. Women’s singles: Miss Lassen beat Miss Evans, 12-10, 9-12, 11-7. Men’s doubles: Vesty and Watson beat Payton and Mawson, 15-11, 15-8. Women’s doubles: Misses Lassen and Lancaster’ beat Misses Jenkins and Garnett, 11-3, 11-3. Men’s singles: Wilde beat Bromley. 21-15. Women’s singles: Miss Carey beat Miss Cook. WANGANUI TOURNEY MASTERTON COMPETITORS SUCCESSFUL. Badminton of a high standard was witnessed at the Wanganui Badminton Association's championship and handicap meeting, there being a large gallery of spectators. Four events were won by Masterton competitors, who left Masterton on Wednesday night to take part in the tourney and "ran the gauntlet" of the atrocious weather experienced in the Manawatu district. Slips and floods were experienced in the night by journey to and from Wanganui. The party, consisting of Messrs F. D. G. Walker, G. W. McCullough, Misses M. Bell and G. McCormick, were hospitably entertained by their Wanganui hosts and speak highly of the cordial reception accorded them. Miss G. McCormick took part in 14 events, as did F. Walker, and played outstanding badminton although tired by the large number of matches. To win the B championship singles, F. Walker played magnificently, and his two other wins were meritorious.

The results of the matches played by the Masterton competitors were: Men's championship singles, B grade: F. D. G. Walker beat Kidd 4/11, 11/1, 12/10; ccmbined A grade doubles: F. Walker and Miss G. McCormick, owe 5, beat C. Sheerin and Miss McDonald (Palmerston North), owe 25, 21-19; combined B championship doubles: F. Walker and Miss McCormick beat G. W. McCullough and Miss M. Bell 11/3, 11/4; women's handicap doubles: Misses M. Bell and G. McCormick owe 2 beat Misses Moyne owe 15. 21/7.
