ALFREDTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

NINTH BIRTHDAY CELEBRATED

("Times-Age" Special.)

Early in the month the Alfredton Women's Institute celebrated its ninth birthday. The annual dance was held at the same time and was a decided success. Dancers came from many districts and the gathering went with a swing from beginning to end. The hall was decorated with the Institute colours and the supper room was fitted out as a lounge with a fire which was much appreciated by non-dancers. Before the supper dance the threetiered cake, which was made by Mesdames M. Hull and R. Low and iced by Mrs J. Hartley, was piped in by Messrs lan .and Francis MacDonald. The president said how pleasing it was to see so many there to celebrate the occasion. She proceeded to light the candles. Miss Napier presented her with a bouquet. Mrs J. Hartley blew the candles out and Mrs G. Napier cut the cake, as she was the oldest, expresident present. Pieces of the cake were handed round by the committee. Items, which were very much appreciated, were given by Institute members between dances. Included was a song in character representing- old time and present day songs. Eight members danced a country dance; a very amusing sketch was given by Mesdames M. Hull and R. Low, and a pretty Spanish item, songs and 'dance were staged. Mrs T. Smith played the accompaniments, and was presented with a shoulder spray. The music was supplied by Mrs Roche and Mr Thompson, extras being played by Mrs Smith and Mr lan MacDonald. Messrs R. G. Low and D. Smith were M's.G. A most enjoyable gathering was brought to a close with the singin gof the National Anthem.
