WOMEN’S DIVISION ENJOYABLE BIRTHDAY PARTY. (“Times-Age” Special.) The seventh birthday party held by the local Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was a most successful gathering. The following contributed to the programme: Miss Carter (accompanied by Miss Jones), vocal solo (encored); Miss Jones, pianoforte solo; Mrs and Miss Curry, vocal duet (encored); Mrs. A. Gyde, elocutionary item (double encore).
An interesting address was delivered by Miss Barr, late Principal of the New Plymouth Girls’ High School, for which she was warmly thanked. In honour of its birthday a lovely bouquet was presented to the Division, being received by the president. The vice-presidents and visiting president were similarly honoured. These were all the work of Miss Betty Curry. The birthday cake was made by Miss V. Welch and iced and decorated with a novel design of green leaves 'and pink flowers by Mrs. Golder. The seven candles were lit by Mrs. Lowes and blow)) out by Miss Anderson, who wished the branch "many happy returns.” Sympathy was expressed for the late secretary, Mrs. Brittain, in the illness of her husband. WOMEN’S INSTITUTES MEETING AT NIREAHA. The monthly meeting of the Nireaha Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs Hawkins in the absence of Mrs Shannon. The motto for the day was “To understand all is to forgive all,” and the roll call “Do men work harder than women?” An appeal was made for exhibits for the Arts and Crafts Exhibition to be held on August 31, the best exhibits to go to the Centennial Exhibition. The address was given by Mrs Mason, who gave a most interesting account of her recent trip to Australia. The competitions resulted as follow: —A scrap-book to be sent to the Leper children, Mrs Drysdale, -; Mrs Hawkins, 2; Mrs F. Hansen, 3. Kiss cakes, Mrs Hawkins, 1; Mrs O'Neil, 2; Mrs Drysdale, 3. Best bloom, Mrs Thomasen, 1; Mrs Brown, 2; Mrs Duncan 3. Afternoon tea brought a pleasant afternoon to a close, the hostesses being Mesdames Thomasen and Brown. RONGOKOKAKO GATHERING. At the monthly meeting of the Rongokokako Women's Institute Mrs Sigvertsen presided over a large attendance of members. A large number of visitors from Hukanui and Eketahuna were welcomed by the president. The Hukanui visitors entertained during the afternoon with a play, songs and recitations and all were thoroughly enjoyed by those present. Miss J. Carter (Rongokokako) also sung two songs. Competitions for the afternoon resulted as follow:—Date scones: Mrs G. Farrow, 1; Miss D. Nagel, 2. Best flower: Mrs L. J. Sigvertsen (polyanthus), 1; Miss D. Nagel (winter rose), 2. Two skill tests were won respectively by Mrs O'Neil and Miss J. Carter and a musical item was won by Mrs S. Smith. A hearty vote of thanks was passed to the Hukanui visitors for entertaining, Miss J. Carter for singing and also to the Eketahuna visitors for judging. A “Bring and Buy” stall in charge of Mrs S. Smith did good business. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames L. and C. Sigvertsen and Goggin (assisted by others), after which the singing of the National Anthem brought the happy gathering to a close. RIFLE SHOOTING RONGOMAI CLUB RE-FORMED. At a meeting held at Rongomai to go into the question of . re-forming the Rongomai Rifle Club there was a splendid attendance. On the motion of Mi - A. Longworth, seconded by Mr J. Evans, it was decided to re-form the club. Officers were elected as follow: — Patron. Mr F. White: president, Mr John Davie: vice-presidents, Messrs C. Morrison. John Evans. O. H. Cooper and T. Lowes; secretary, Mr J. Reid: treasurer, Mr O. 11. Cooper: committee. Messrs O. Evans. E. Morrison and A. Longworth and officers ex-officio. It was decided to write to the Defence Department requesting that the range be inspected and to forward enrolment forms. The club will have an initial membership of 26 with the prospect of another If, or 20 joining up al a later date. The matter of subscription was kf till the next meeting which will be called as soon as a reply is received from the Defence Department. GOLF COMPETITIONS WEEK-END POSTPONEMENT. Owing to the very wet conditions of the links, players are advised not to play over the weekend. The championship qualifying rounds will be plaved us soon as conditions are suitable.
