FAREWELL SOCIAL SETTLER AND FAMILY HONOURED (“Times-Age” Special.) The hall at Pahautea was well filled on Thursday night when the settlers of Pukio, Kahutara and Pahautea tendered a farewell social to Mr. and Mrs. Les Smith and family, who are shortly leaving the district. Dancing was indulged in by a large number of those present. Mr. Nix and Miss Crossby won the Monte Carlo. Vocal items were given by Miss Stansell and Mr. H. Graham, accompanied by Mrs. Sadler. Mr. Corlct and Mrs. Playle both referred to the work Mr and Mrs. Smith had done for the district. Mr. Bargh endorsed their remarks and asked Mr. and Mrs. Smith and family to accept a beautiful chiming clock suitably inscribed. Mr. Smith feelingly replied. A delicious supper was provided. The gathering concluded with the singing of ‘Auld Lang Syne.” On Thursday afternon the Pahautea branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union combined with the ladies of the District Guild and farewelled Mrs. Les Smith. Sister Shadbolt (Martinborough) gave an interesting talk on her experiences in Spain during the recent war. Mrs. Campbell Pearce was the winner of the competition, with Mrs. Rendle second. Mrs J. C. Bidwill (president of the Guild), on behalf of the Division and the Guild, presented Mrs. Smith with a necklace of pearls. Mrs. Ross (president of the Pahautea branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union, gave her a beautiful shoulder spray. Mrs. Smith suitably acknowledged the honour extended to her. Shoulder sprays were also presented to Mrs. Shadbolt and Mrs. Jamieson (president of the Martinborough Women’s Division). Members of the Women’s Division were the hostesses. BOY SCOUTS PRESENTATION OF BADGES. On Thursday night the Boy Scouts spent a happy time in games and Scout stunts at their den. During the evening, Deputy-Superin-tendent Boston, of the local Fire Brigade, presented badges to the following Scouts:—lnterpretation, L. Robinson; path-finders, L. Robinson, G. Harkness, L. Halpin, G..,Fellingham, G. McNamara; firemen. L. Robinson, L. Halpin, K. Lang, G. Sharp, G. Fellingham, D. Johnston, G. "White, M. Hunter, G. Harkness, J. McNamara. The gathering concluded with a rousing sing-song and supper. GOLF COMPETITIONS CHALLENGE CUP ROUND. The fourth round for the Challenge Cup was played on the Gum Grove links Mrs. Carlyon and Mrs. Benton were first, Mrs. J. B. Davis second, and Miss M. Ruane third. A stableford was played on Wednesday and resulted in Miss J. Ruane being first, Mrs. Benton second, and Mrs Lovegrove third. FLOOD PEAK SETTLERS' TRYING TIME. The settlers of Lower Valley are having a trying time owing to the flood water which is expected to reach its peak tonight. Throughout last night, the farmers were busy removing stock to higher levels. A bleak southerly yesterday morning caused Bull Hili to be again covered with snow. Personal Items. Mrs. D. Donald, Masterton, is visiting Mrs. Roy Donald, “Gumgrove.” Mr. Tildesley, Mangamahoe, is visiting his daughter, Mrs. S. Grant, Pahautea. At the funeral of the late Mr George Houghton the service at the graveside was conducted by the Rev. J. T. Holland, and the pall-bearers were Messrs J. W. Fellingham, H. Lawson. J. S. Viles. W. Stewart, R. Pike and J. Graham. There was a large atendance and among the many beautiful wreaths were those from the Borough Council and from the Featherston School Committee. Mr. Houghton having served both bodies for a record period of years. His service to the Borough Council extend to the early days of the Town Board, prior to the formation of a borough.
