CARTERTON

f WAIRARAPA PIPE BAND ENJOYABLE CONCERT AND DANCE (“Times-Age” Special ) A very enjoyable and successful concert and dance, organised by the Women’s Committee of the Wairarapa Pipe Band, was held in the Masonic Hall on Thursday evening, the proceeds from which are to go towards the Band Uniform Fund. The programme was as follows: —Vocal duet, Misses A. and C. Fisher; Highland Hing, Miss Mavis Geange; vocal solo, Mrs Peacock; pipe selection, Messrs P. Fisher and B. Beaven; sword dance, Master Corlett (Martinborough); recitation, Norma Tinsley; pianoforte solo, Beverley Goodin; pipe selection, Master Corlett; humorous Scotch song, Mr Tomlin; sailor’s hornpipe, Miss Corlett; vocal duet, Norman Tinsley and B. Goodin; musical trio, Miss Hayes, Master Hayes and Miss M. Reid; vocal solo, Mr McKinnon. The accompanists were Miss C. Berrill and Miss Heather McKinnon. Supper was served, after which dancing was indulged in. Mr Stan Hall acted as M.C., and the music was supplied by Mrs Rodgers, extras being played by the Pipe Band. “PARCEL EVENING” CARTERTON BRIDE HONOURED. A parcel evening was tendered Mrs Cook prior to her wedding by her girl friends. The gathering was a musical one with competitions, dancing, and singing. At an appropriate interval in the proceedings, the guest of the evening was invited to open the many parcels which were displayed, revealing an outstanding lot of useful presents. Mr Cook thanked everyone for the enjoyable evening and the many beautiful gifts.

The opening of one of the parcels brought forth shrieks from the ladies when a tiny mouse hopped forth and scampered over the floor. Music for the dancing was played by Miss M. Herrick, Mrs J. Turley and Mr C. Kiddie.

HEAVY FALL OF SNOW

RANGES COVERED. A heavy fall of snow occurred again last night and this morning the Maungaraki and Tararua ranges are covered low down with a white mantle. On top of the snow a fairly sharp frost was experienced in the Valley. Personal. Mr A. C. Knutson, who recently underwent an operation in Wellington, has returned to work very much improved in health. Mr Norman P. Williams, supervisor at the Carterton Post Office, has received notice to go to Eketahuna as relieving postmaster in place of Mr R. L. Boyes, who is retiring on superannuation. Mr Williams will take up his new duties at the end of August. Workman Injured. A painful accident happened yesterday to Mr Jas. Newbould, an employer of the Wairarapa South County Council. With other workmen he was engaged in road work up ’the Maungatarere Valley, when a large boulder became displaced and fell heavily upon his foot, bruising it badly. The mishap will necessitate his resting for eight or ten days. Dr. W. J. C. Wells attended the injured man. Property Purchased. At the Carterton saleyards yesterday the property of the late W. Bowyer's estate, situated in Belvedere Road, near the Belvedere Cheese Factory, was sold. The property is a very valuable one and beside the land there is a comfortable dwelling house, stable, cowsheds, milking shed, hayshed barn and whare. The purchaser was Mr Thomas, of Carterton. The sale was made by Messrs Wright Stephenson and Co., on behalf of the trustees. Miniature Rifles. The Wairarapa representative miniature rifle team will fire against the Bush representatives at Pahiatua tonight. For information of the shooters the bridge across the Ruamahunga River at Mount Bruce, which was closed temporarily for repairs, is open to traffic.
