SENSATIONAL VICTORY
AMERICANS DEFEATED. AT BOSTON TENNIS TOURNEY. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. BOSTON, August 17. In the national doubles lawn tennis tournament A. K. Quist and J. Bromwich (Australia) beat C. G. Mako and J. Tidball (U.S.A.), 6/2. 6/1, 3/2. It was a sensational victory which, to those who, like the United States Davis Cup captain. Mr W. Pate, and Mr H. Ward, president of the United States Lawn Tennis Association, saw ‘.he match, re-emphasised that Australia is likely to win*the Davis Cup.
Mi- Pate, however, commented: “Let the Australians get cocky. I am even glad it happened this way. The doubles team is only as strong as its weakest link and Tidball is not in Mako’s class."
J. H. Crawford and H. Hopman (Australia) beat C. E. Hare (Britain) and L. Hecht (Czechoslovakia). 6/3. 3/6, 6/3. 4/6, 6/4. In the mixed doubles H. Hopman (Australia) and Miss A. Marble (U.S.A.) defeated F. Guernsey and Miss Nina Brown (U.S.A.). 6/2. 6/4. and enter the quarter-finals against J. K. Crawford (Australia) and Miss B. Nuthall (Britain), who beat W. Robertson (Boston) and Miss Phenny Xydes (Greece). 6 0. 6 0. J. Bromwich (Australia) and Mrs R. Mathieu (France) beat John Doeg and Miss D. Bundy (U.S.A.), 6/4. 6/3, and enter the quarter-finals against G. Mulloy (U.S.A.) and Miss Valerie Scott (Britain).
| Hopman was the outstanding player lof the match, the stroke analysis showing he made twenty-seven placements and only twenty-nine errors. McNeill’s inability to hold his service wa.s the American's most glaring weakness. Mrs Fabyan and Miss Marble (U.S.A.) defeated Mrs S. Henrotin (France) and Mrs D. B. Andrus (U.S.A.), 6/3. 6 1. thus entering the finals. WIN FOR AUSTRALIANS. ENTER FINAL OF DOUBLES. (Received This Day. 10.15 a.m.) BOSTON. August 18. In the national doubles Crawford and Hopman defeated Parker and McNeill 6 4. 4/6. 6 3. 6 2. thus entering the finals. The marked superiority of Australia's second string team was almost anti-climatic, so convinced are the majority of observers that Australia's chances of winning the Davis Cup arc supreme. Hopman led in brilliancy. His volleying. smashing and court strategy proved a perfect foil for Crawford’s steady back court game. The Americans. I moreover, were slow in coming to thej net and the ball was continuously put’ at their feet. I
