MASS EXECUTIONS

REPORTED IN SPAIN PRISONERS MACHINE-GUNNED IN DITCHES. ACTIVITIES OF INFORMERS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day. 10.15 a.m.) LONDON. August 18. “The Times" Hendaye correspondent says travellers from Barcelona, Madrid and Bilboa report crowded prisons and many executions. Special courts try batches of prisoners who are machinegunned in ditches at the Montjuich suburbs of Barcelona and also at the artillery range at Retamares.

Informers are active against Spaniards and foreigners, including those who lived in Republican Spain during the war. The Government has informed France and the United States that prisoners of these nationalities would soon be released.
