BRITAIN TO PROTEST

Fifteen Japanese bombers (lew over British territorial waters in the vicinity of Stanley Peninsula and Hong Kong island. The shore batteries did not lire, but a vigorous protest is being prepared.
The Japanese during last night completed the occupation of the Chinese area along the entire border of Hong Kong.
A report received last night stated that Hong Kong was quiet, and British troops were still manning the border. Firing had died down,, and Chinese refugees had ceased to pour in. The Japanese are believed to be preventing further escapes from the peninsula. MURDER THREATS AGAINST BRITISH CITIZENS IN TIENTSIN. NO SIGN OF RESUMPTION OF NEGOTIATIONS. TIENTSIN, August 18. A number of British citizens have received letters from the Chinese Youths' Association threatening death unless they leave China. It is learned from Tokio that there is no sign of resumption of the Tientsin negotiations. The British Ambassador, Sir Robert Craigie, informed the Foreign Minister, Mr Arita, that he is still awaiting instructions on the economic issues, particularly as they affect the Dominions. French and Japanese authorities in Tientsin arc at last co-operating feverishly in erecting dykes to save the foreign areas from serious floods. The British Bund is already under water.
