VICE-REGAL RAIL=CAR
ELEGANT & COMFORTABLE VEHICLE. DESIGNED & CONSTRUCTED RY DEPARTMENT. ißy Tek-graph—Press Association.) AUCKLAND. August 18. Elegance in tlie appointment, equiprnent..and design and beauty in finish that reveal a high standard of craft and workmanship are found in the new vice-regal staff and dining-car, which has been constructed at Otahuhti Railway Workshops. The first public appearance of tlie car yesterday, as it completed its running trials on the main line and waterfront deviation aroused considerable interest. Its red bodywork, white roof and bright plated external fittings made the car a centre of attraction, as it travelled over suburban lines. Designed and constructed entirely by the department, the car is 56ft in length, and weighs just over 28 tons. The car contains seven compartments, a 15ft dining saloon, three two-berth sleeping cabins, a kitchen, a shower and lavatory, and a luggage room. The kitchen is commodious for a railcar, and is replete with all conveniences and equipment, including a gas stove, a water heater over a sink, a large refrigerator and ample cupboards. A corridor extends the full length of the car from the dining-room endwards, and makes access easy to all compartments. The new car was delivered at Auckland tonight, and will be brought into commission when his Excellency and staff return to Wellington tonight.
