PRICE OF BEER

BOYCOTT OF HOTELS. RAILWAYMEN’S ATTITUDE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, August 18. The employees of the Addington Railway Workshops are in accord with the Wellington waterside workers in their attitude toward the raising of the price of beer and the elimination of the house "shout" by publicans. One solitary voice was raised against a decision to declare the hotels of Christchurch and suburbs "black" when Hie question was discussed by a largely-attended meeting of men at the workshops during the lunch hour today. They went further than the waterside workers, for they demanded that the standard measure should be the imperial pint. The final resolution, which was redrafted by a small sub-committee set up by the meeting, was as follows: — "That this meeting of Addington Workshop employees, representing 1600 men, asks the Government to take the necessary steps to prevent workers, who are the chief consumers of beer, from being exploited by publicans. We also ask that publicans.be brought into line with other retailers by the introduction of the imperial pint as the standard measure, and thus comply with the requirement of the Weights and Measures Act. "This meeting also protests against the decision of the licensed victuallers’ association regarding the most exorbitant prices charged for beer and spirits and sincerely pledges itself to refrain from frequenting hotels in ChristChurch and suburbs till such time as the licensed victuallers reconsider their decision.”
