TURF NEWS AND NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Record Fields for Pakuranga Hunt Club Meeting JACK TAR LOOKS LIKE STRONG FANCY FOR BIG EVENT THE CARDINAL MAY BE A GOOD FAVOURITE (BY “CARBINE.”) Record acceptances have been received for the Pakuranga Hunt Club meeting, to be held at Ellerslie on Saturday. Indications point to a successful opening of the new racing season in Auckland. The Sylvia Park Handicap will be run in two divisions, but the totalisator will be only open once. The stake has been increased to £l5O for each division. Betting will be on the win-and-place system.
GREENMOUNT HUNTERS' STEEPLECHASE. About two miles and a half.
Battle Pomp 9 0 The honour of carrying top weight in this race has been accorded to British Sovereign, who will face the starter with Ist 21b more aboard than the rest of the runners. British Sovereign has the best form of the field and reports indicate that he has been working out well. Last season Kittle was placed on several occasions, but Gold Brocade has not been in action for some time. The jumping ability of Gay Cavalier will probably find support for that horse. Tupeotu, according to northern reports is shaping well and might share some of the favouritism. Of the others Anagram appears to be
the best, although Paddle and Caurnie might not be far away in the run home. Most in demand may be British Sovereign Gay Cavalier Kittle
The Harris Memorial Hack and Hunters’ Hurdles for which Knight of Australia is top weight, should prove to be one of the most interesting races on the programme. In the Great Northern meeting Kinght of Australia did not impress greatly. Gadger at the' weight would appear to be a good bet. He has been performing consistently and will probably be well supported. King Musk, if he decides to do his best will not be far away. A promising jumper of which little has been seen is Royal Nation and in some quarters this horse is expected to be in the money. Chikara is a stayer and ran a good second at Ellerslie in June. Of the rest Long Span, who will be making his first appearance over the sticks, appears to be the most likely as on the flat he has plenty of toe. The betting, however, might favour Gadger Royal Nation Chikara
Among the thi'ee-year-olds who are engaged and who were winners last year are Our Jean. Royal Tray, Wyndora and Clipper. At Te Aroha Our Jean was successful in good class and looks like a prospect. Wyndora is a runner worthy of support. Vai Lu, who will carry top weight, is one of the best, but this horse might possibly be in need of a race or two. Summary, who is well down on the list, must not be lost sight of, but those commanding the public's respect might include Our Jean Erlick Clipper
Brazen Bold is a good one and is just coming right. He should be well supported. Hunto, Princess Vai and Gay Movie figure among the three-year-olds who were place getters last season and must all be considered as possibilities. Odtaa won impressively at Te Rapa last February and has been working out well. In an open event, . however, the public might favour
Brazen Bold Odtaa Princess Vai
Heading the list in the Jellicoe Handicap is Maori Song. In his only start at Wellington Maori Song failed, but it is reported that he has been training very satisfactorily since. Maori Song is good over the mile and if the track is at all soft he will bo at home. Valmint is a horse who is capable of nulling off this race. At Wellington Valmint did not race to form, but the position on Saturday might be different. The form of Jack Tar at Wellington. when he scored in the Whyte Handicap must find that horse support. His track work is pleasing critics and it will take a good one to head him. Marie's Acre. Airam and Jayola should all be on hand to make the going interesting. Very Glad ran a third recently and is expected to take a prominent part in proceedings. Black Musk scored a second in his last start and must be liked. However, a wide range of betting may be topped by Jack Tar Valmint Marie’s Acre
PAKURANGA HUNT CUP STEEPLECHASE. About three miles.
Sixteen horses will face the starter in the Pakuranga Hunt Cup Steeplechase. Top weight will be Biform with 10.8 and this weight is not out of the way for a horse of Biform's ability. He will probably command a goodly portion of the betting. A second at the Great Northern meeting will find support for En Tour who should not be far away when the numbers go up. Saint Musk is one of the best jumpers seen for some time and indications point to his returning to top form. However, the journey might prove his undoing. Bridegroom will probably go out as a hot favourite and there appears no reason why he should not give an excellent account. Wykemist, Little Briton, Bells of Bow and Tea Chat should all be well up, while a horse not to be overlooked is London, who is a careful, safe jumper. Those finding favour-might include
Bridegroom Biform En -Tour or Smilin’ Thru
In May the top weight in the Auckland Handicap scored a good win at Pukekohe. He has failed since but appears to have freshened up. Palmint and High Delight are confidently expected to run good faces. Erlick must be considered, although the form of this horse is somewhat patchy. One of the most promising hacks is The Cardinal, and after his splendid June form will probably be well backed. The distance should suit Valdene who might be liked. Probably one of the best bets will be Melvanui, while Wild Acre is not to be forgotten. Support, however, might come for The Cardinal Erlick Melvanui
Top weight in the Ladies’ Bracelet is Gladium, and the Levin runner has excellent credentials. Gladium scored an impressive win at Marton at the end of last month and is again expected to be in the money. General Riske ran into second place at Te Rapa and must be given a show. Whenua and Tupeotu should have an even chance, while Rey Lu, who has been getting in some excellent training, should not be..concerned about the distance.-Popu-lar fancies might include
Gladium General Riske Rey Lu
The day’s racing will conclude with the Admiralty Handicap. Francis Drake with 10.2 aboard is top weight and may be in need of a race or two before striking form. Several seasons ago Silver Jubilee was a brilliant sprinter and at Tauranga in June staged a return to form. If he has been training on since he must be given a show. Prince Acre ran second on the last day of the Wellington meeting and if the going is at all soft he must be considered as a candidate. Young Paddon and Gay Seton might upset calculations, while Whirling must be fancied. Bachelor King has been working well and Erndale was unlucky at the June meeting. Te Monowai must be given a show; so must Valspear. In an open event a likely trio might be Bachelor King Gay Seton Prince Acre
